Racist banners were displayed during the April 25th, 2017 match between Guangzhou Evergrande and Hong Kong Eastern. AFC began an immediate investigation due to the AFC ban on displays of political slogans and Guangzhou could face two-match ban and heavy fines. As a result, the AFC adjusted the penalty with a two year reprieve. At present, Guangzhou Evergrande holds the right of further appeal.
