On September 30, 2023, the 2023 Shanghai International Sports Arbitration Forum featuring "New Development of Sports Arbitration" was successfully held at the International Table Tennis Federation Museum in Shanghai. The Forumwas guided by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and the China Commission of Arbitration for Sport (CCAS), and organized by the CAS Shanghai Alternative Hearing Centre. As a relaunch of the International Sports Arbitration events, this Forum is also the first international and domestic academic exchange event held after the official establishment of the CCAS in February 2023, with strong support from the Shanghai Municipal Government, the Shanghai Sports Federation, the Sports Law Research Society of the Shanghai Law Society, the Shanghai University of Sport, the Shanghai University of Political Science and Law, and other organizations.
Before the Forum, Ms. XI Dong, Vice Mayor of Shanghai, met with officials of the Michael Lenard OLY the Vice President of the International Council of Arbitration for Sport (ICAS), Mr. Matthieu Reeb, Director General of CAS, Mr. XU Bin, Director General of Shanghai Administration of Sports, Mr. Fabien Cagneux, CAS Anti-Doping Division Managing Counsel, and Mr. CHEN Yiping, Commissioner of CAS Shanghai Alternative Hearing Centre, attended the Forum and delivered speeches.
The Forum was hosted by Mr. MA Chunfu, Director of the CAS Shanghai Alternative Hearing Centre, who commented on each speaker's keynote speech. Mr. WU Wei, partner of Llinks Law Offices, was invited to attend the forum and delivered a keynote speech entitled "Construction and Prospect of Sports Arbitration in China". From the perspective of his deep involvement in the legislative revision of the Sports Law and as a senior arbitrator of the CAS and CCAS, Mr. WU Wei elaborated on the background of the development of sports arbitration in China, as well as put forward unique insights and forward-looking suggestions on the trend of changes in the sports dispute resolution mechanism and the difficulties in the practice of sports arbitration. Meanwhile, Mr. CHU Ruoyu provided on-site legal translation to support for the Forum.
With the accelerated pace of internationalization and industrialization of sports, the new development of sports requires, on the one hand, the continuous improvement of the legal system of sports, and on the other hand, the governance of sports laws and the punishment of violation, the number of sports disputes and legal issues is increasing, and sports arbitration is a universally recognized and effective way of dispute resolution. This Forum focuses on the development of sports arbitration in the new situation of global sports, fully explores the role of sports arbitration in escorting the development of sports, and contributes to the construction of Shanghai as a global famous sports city and a strong sports country.
