As the World Intellectual Property Day is approaching, the 2021 Intellectual Property NanHu Forum was held in Wuhan, Hubei Province on April 17. Founded by the Zhongnan University of Economics and Law's Intellectual Property Research Center in 2004, the Intellectual Property NanHu Forum has been successfully held for 16 sessions so far, which is the annual academic feast within the field of intellectual property law. The theme of 2021 Intellectual Property NanHu Forum is the New Concept of rule of law and the Reformation of Intellectual Property System, and it was divided into six sub-forums including copyright, trademark, patent, judicial protection, intellectual property issues, Legal Governance of the Online Games' New Bussiness Form. Experts and scholars in intellectual property academia and practical circles attended the forum. During the forum, the representatives and guests expressed their opinions on some most controversial issues in justice, such as online games infringements, identifying online games as movie-like works, games infringement comparison method, etc. James Wang first explained the creativeness of movies under the concept of copyright law, and the essential difference between online games and movies in terms of the expression method, the creative process and forms. Secondly, he criticized that the judiciary lacks the ability to deconstruct online games, which leads to incorrectly identifying the whole scenes in online games as movies.
James Wang has been deeply involved in legal issues on the technology, media, telecom industry (TMT) and online games industry for 15 years, possessing extensive practice experience. He has dealt with a number of online game infringement cases involving legendary games, shooting games and sandbox games, etc., and a series of anti-unfair competition cases aimed at establish a healthy ecology of online games including DNF and Hunting Elves Together from Tencent Games.
